Indonesia Traditional ‘’Kebaya”
In many parts of Indonesia,the kebaya is seen as a strong nationalistic symbol and has been strongly supported as a symbol of identity for Indonesian women by prominent figures throughout the nation’s history.
Recently,this traditional dress has become recognized internationally as it is used as the uniform for flight attendance(stewardesses) on Singapore Airlines,Malaysia Airlines and Garuda Indonesia.
In current situation, people believe that progress and deterioration of a nation is determined by the intelligence of identity or a pride. A big nation is a nation that have a high intelligence of identity, and so is the opposite. Kebaya is one of the nationalistic symbol and has been strongly supported as a symbol of identity for Indonesian women. A kebaya is a traditional blouse-dress combination that originates from Indonesia and is worn by women in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, southern Thailand, Cambodia, and the southern part of the Philippines. As Indonesian young generation, we are glad that Kebaya has become recognized internationally recently. Massive thanks to all the fabulous designer out there that has been successful to create an innovation for kebaya with their magic touch. Previously, kebaya did not get enough appreciation because most people think that this traditional blouse-dress looks kinda old-fashioned. But nowadays, we often see this modern kebaya worn by the majority of Indonesian women including teenagers when they’re attending several formal occasions. Even now, kebaya has become clothing products which are sought and be produced massively and subsequently sold with affordable price in traditional markets. It means that this modern kebaya has managed to draw people’s attraction and successfully gain a huge appreciation from society out there. And not only that, kebaya is now also being the uniform for flight attendance on Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and others. It means that this modern kebaya is quite well known and being respected by another countries. Because of the hardwork of the designers kebaya is no longer only be a national identity but had to turn it into a fashion item that is eagerly awaited for its new models. With modern label, kebaya appears with various modifications. Some are combined with other traditional fashion models, there is a short-sleeved, some are given embroidery diverse forms, as well as using various types of clothing materials. Unlike many traditional kebaya which is using brocade material, the latest modern kebaya is using cotton, chiffon, tule, and other materials. But not all designers agree with the change in the trend of modern culture. Some well-known fashion designer considers the current trends of modern kebaya has strayed too far from the traditional grip. Designers Edward Hutabarat mentioned that kebaya characteristic lies precisely in its simplicity. Kebaya didn’t need to be modified with various type of modifications or ornate by too many sequins. Kebaya should be modernized but still have to reflect the simplicity because this simplicity reflects the intelligence identity of Indonesia.
However in the end,we should proud to wear kebaya,because kebaya has been recognized by foreign as a beautiful and unique dress women.Give some modern touch is a good idea,it can make kebaya doesn’t seems old-fashioned.But use too many modern touch can give negative side,like the originality of kebaya can be lost.We know means half of Indonesia is lost too.So,as a young generations we have to preserve kebaya in any kind of situation,in traditional side and modern side,we must still proud of kebaya.
